About Dick Stevens
Richard Stevens graduated from Mars Hill Junior College with an AA degree, went to University of Richmond with a BA degree, completed studies at Southeastern Baptist Seminary for a B.D. degree in 1957, and continued as acquisitions librarian at Southeastern for 2 years after graduation. Subsequently, He started Stevensbook in 1954.
Dick has always loved books but was a slow reader. When he went to Seminary in 1954, he saw a need for a place where students could sell or trade-in religious books. so then he worked with two other students to get a few books to sell on the seminary campus.
When Wake Forest University moved in 1956, He began renting his own location. It was a former store building which had rooms for students. Books were kept in 3 of the rooms, and rented the others to students for $7.00 a month, two to each room. Later, he had about 15 students living above the store. Several of the students worked in the bookstore part time between classes.
The Store ultimately served as a library for the students who lived over the store, as well as a bookstore for the town and seminary. Students and faculty came from UNC, NC State, Duke and other colleges around the state because it was the only bookstore with rare theological books. Later, the Store began to carry some new books, to be up to date, which the local campus bookstore did not carry Then some libraries began to sell us books that they did not need, and so the Store grew up quickly to several thousand in inventory.
Stevensbook was loved by many students and pastors. They were able to buy and trade religious books at low prices. The Store also got many “sale books” from publishers that were reduced in price.
Dick's hope for the bookstore was that someone with the knowledge of books would take the books and make it into a blessing to others.
After staying about 25 years in the old dormitory store building in Wake Forest, the Store was moved to a larger grocery store building which allowed the Store to shelve more books. However in the late 80's, business was slow and it was time to expand again, thus a company offered to move the Store Raleigh if it would rent their 16,000 sq. ft. building. The stay lasted about 8 years until the owner needed that space for his own business and had us moved. We got a 12,000 square foot former furniture store building which was nice with plenty of parking and near where we are now. Unfortunately, the building boom came in a few years later and a developer bought the property to make a shopping center. That is when the Store moved to the Kennedy Building, the current location.
The road has been long over these 55 years. Though he has now passed on the Store to a younger generation, yet his firm belief, that books can minister when no one else can and to go forth to spread the Word, will always be remembered.
